India’s largest energy conglomerate with roots planted way back in 1975 to accelerate power development in India. Since then it has established itself as the dominant power major with presence in the entire value chain of the power generation business. From fossil fuels it has forayed into generating electricity via hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources. The total installed capacity of the company is 58,156 MW (including JVs) own stations include 24 coal based, 7 gas based, 1 Hydro 1 Wind 11 Solar and 1 Small hydro plant.

Customer Side

As the loading of a power plant can vary from minimum load to peak load due to various internal and external factors, the plant’s processes have to be adjusted accordingly. Driving the pumps with fixed speed motors and controlling them at partial loads either by throttling or mechanically by fluid coupling decreases the power plant’s efficiency tremendously.

As a vendor

  • Being a PSU customer, it was a L1 based tender with very stringent BQR requirements.

  • Qualifying for BQR for a Turnkey project of civil, mechanical and electrical.

  • Long tendering process and then log execution of project.

Major Challenges were

  • Replacement of fluid coupling with flexible coupling.

  • Retrofit requirement in quite an old plant.

  • Assurance for high efficiency system.

  • Winning over competition in L1 bidding process.

Solution

A complete turnkey solution of electrical, civil and mechanical with replacement of existing fluid coupling control to flexible coupling with VFD control. Imput VCB, Motor and Fan retained as it is. New solution with high efficiency for maximum benefits of energy saving and process control.
